SIM cards and eSIM, in plain language
Both objects do the same job: they let a phone present a subscription. The plastic and the download differ in the ways you can lose them, move them, and lock yourself out.
- SIM
- A small card. Move it to another unlocked phone and the subscription usually moves with it. Bend it, and you may be visiting a shop.
- eSIM
- A profile saved on the phone, often installed from a QR code. There is no card to transfer. Deleting the profile before a replacement works can leave you with no line.
- Prepaid
- Credit first, service while the credit or bundle lasts. Useful when you want a ceiling. Awkward when the ceiling arrives during a call you needed.
- Postpaid
- A bill after use. Read what happens past the included data. “Unlimited” in advertising often still has a fair-use rule. The rule is in the operator’s terms, not on this page.
Three codes that are not interchangeable
People arrive at a shop, or at our inbox, holding the wrong secret. They are different objects.
- PIN. Usually four to eight digits. It unlocks the SIM so the phone may use it. You choose it, and you can change it. Three wrong attempts and the card asks for the PUK instead.
- PUK. The unblock code, longer than the PIN. It is issued with the subscription, often printed on the plastic card the SIM was punched out of. If that card went in a bin, the operator that owns the line is who can reissue it after identifying you. Guessing burns the remaining attempts and can kill the SIM. This journal never wants a photograph of it.
- RIO. Twelve characters for number portability, obtained from the line by calling 1234 or texting 1234. It is not a PIN, it does not unlock a phone, and it should go only to the operator you are joining. The procedure is in how a network is put together.
What a shop will ask to see
Moroccan operators identify the person who takes a line. A resident is asked for a national identity card. A visitor is asked for a passport. The exact desk procedure is the operator’s, and it changes, so treat a blog checklist as a packing list rather than a regulation: passport, the phone you will actually use, and the account login if you are adding an eSIM to a line you already have. Do not email those documents to maroc-telecom.top. We cannot open an account with them, and we do not want copies.
A prepaid line stops when the credit or the bundle ends. A postpaid line bills afterward. Neither fact tells you whether the radio in the street is strong. It tells you what happens at the limit, and what happens if a bill is missed. “Unlimited” on a poster still needs the fair-use clause from that operator’s terms. We do not reprint prices. They move, and a frozen dirham figure would be the most misleading sentence on this page.
A check before you buy any line
Look up whether the phone is carrier-locked. A locked phone may only accept a SIM from the company that sold it, which is a poor surprise at the end of a flight. The setting is usually under cellular or mobile-service information, and the wording changes by brand. If you cannot tell, ask the seller in writing.
Then look up eSIM support only if you intend to use one. Many recent phones have it. Many still do not, or have it only in some regional models. A photograph of a QR code is not a plan, and a plan is not a radio signal.
Two lines in one handset
Dual SIM, or one physical SIM plus an eSIM, lets you keep a home number beside a local prepaid line. Choose which line is allowed to use mobile data, or you will spend the wrong allowance. Label them in the phone (“home”, “here”) so a tired evening does not place a call on the expensive one. Calling-code habits are covered in calls and messages.
Questions worth asking a provider
- Which networks and generations does this subscription include, and is 5G a separate switch?
- What happens to voice, SMS, and data when the bundle ends?
- Can this phone, this exact model, install your eSIM, and can I keep a physical SIM at the same time?
- How do I record the QR code or the account login before I need a replacement?
- If I already have a Moroccan number, can it move, and how long might it be silent? See the short note on portability in how a network is put together.
- Which identity document do you require, and will the shop I can actually reach complete it?
Ask these of the company that would take your money. maroc-telecom.top does not issue profiles, cards, or accounts, and an email to our desk cannot activate a line.
Moving an eSIM without deleting the only copy
A plastic SIM moves by moving the card. An eSIM moves only if the operator lets you install the profile on the new phone, which often means they must release or reissue it. Until that new profile is on the new phone and has registered, leave the old one in place. Deleting first, “to be tidy,” is how people spend an evening with no number and a QR code that the operator has already marked as used.
Practical order, when the provider’s own instructions do not contradict it: confirm the new phone is unlocked and lists eSIM support for its regional model; ask the provider for a fresh install or a transfer; install while you have another way to receive their confirmation text, because the old line may drop during the move; only then remove the old profile. Save the account number somewhere that is not solely on the phone. A locked handset is a bad filing cabinet. A photograph of a QR code stored in a cloud album is also a secret: anyone with that image may be able to install the profile, depending on how the operator issued it. Treat it like a password.
If a card or a profile stops behaving
Restart the phone. Toggle airplane mode. Confirm you are entering the PIN and not the RIO, and that you have not used the last PUK attempt on a guess. Try the physical SIM in a second unlocked phone if you have one: if the second phone works, the first handset is involved. If neither works, the subscription or the card is the likelier story, and the operator’s support path is the one that can see the account. Do not delete an eSIM profile as a first experiment.
Keep a photo of the account number and the support path somewhere that is not only on the phone itself. A locked handset is a bad filing cabinet.
