Calls, texts, and messages that travel as data
A phone call
Uses the operator’s voice service, unless the phone is set to place it over Wi-Fi or an app. Works, when it works, with almost no setup. Spends voice minutes or credit, depending on the subscription. A weak data connection does not always mean a weak voice call, and the reverse is also true.
An SMS
A short text over the mobile network, not over a chat app. Small, plain, and often the thing that still leaves the building when data is sulking. Banks and delivery codes still use it. Do not assume an app notification replaced it.
An internet message
WhatsApp, iMessage where both people use Apple, and similar apps ride on data or Wi-Fi. They can carry photos and voice notes. They fail when the data path fails, even if the phone still shows a network name. Both people need the app and a working session.
Choose for the job in front of you
If you need a yes or a no from someone who may be in a stairwell, send an SMS or a very short app message, then call. If you need to see a face and both sides have already completed a video call from those rooms, use video and keep the text as the backup. The family habits around that choice are in staying close when the miles are real.
Wi-Fi calling is a phone feature that sends a normal-looking call over a wireless network. It depends on the handset and on whether the operator allows it. It can help in a stone room with decent home Wi-Fi and poor indoor radio. It can also fail in a café where the call is competing with everyone else’s traffic. Ask the operator if your line supports it, then try it from the room you care about. Do not assume the feature is on just because the menu exists.
International numbers, written so a phone can dial them
Morocco’s country code is +212. Drop the first 0 from the domestic number. A mobile that starts 06 or 07, and a Casablanca fixed number that starts 05, both lose that 0. The journal’s own desk number is 0522 260 960 inside the country and +212 522 260 960 from anywhere else. Store relatives the same way, with the plus sign, so a phone in either country can place the call.

The 00 examples assume you are dialling from a Moroccan line. A mobile that is roaming may want the plus form instead. When you are already inside Morocco and calling a Moroccan number, local dialling still uses the 0. The plus form is the one that travels. Read it back digit by digit. Messaging apps sometimes hide the number after the first chat, which is why a screenshot of a profile is not a backup. Keep the real number in the address book.
SMS still matters for the codes that banks, border systems, and delivery desks send. Those texts use the mobile network’s messaging service, not a chat app. An app notification does not replace them. If you are mid-portability, or you have just swapped the data line in a dual-SIM phone, those codes can land on the line you are not watching. Two lines, and the call that goes out on the wrong one
A phone with a home SIM and a Moroccan prepaid line will happily place the evening call on whichever line is set as the default for voice. Label them in the settings (“home”, “here”) and set mobile data to the line whose allowance you intend to spend. A video call inside a messaging app follows the data line, not necessarily the voice line. Check both before a month in which one of them is expensive to use from the wrong country. Calling-code habits above still apply: the Moroccan line dials local numbers with 0, and the foreign line may try to dial them as if they were numbers at home.
A sign of life is allowed to be small
You do not owe anyone a video call from a moving bus. A sentence — “On the way, will call after 19:00” — protects the people who love you and spends almost nothing.
